Bike Patrol Unit

In 1997, Prospect Park established its first bike patrol unit.  This unit is in service from the middle of May to the end of October each year and has proven very successful.  Not only is this unit an additional resource to patrol the borough, it serves as a great community relations tool for the police department.  Below are the full-time officers who participate in the bike patrol unit.

Officer Phillip Coffin (left) is the senior member of the bike patrol unit.  Officer Coffin has been a full time member of the department since 1990, and prior to that was a part time officer within the borough.  Officer Coffin was very instrumental in equipping the unit with the needed equipment to get the pilot program off the ground.

Officer Bill Bozeman (center) Started in Prospect Park in 1995 as a part time officer, accepted a full time position within another department months later, then in 1999 was rehired by the borough as a full time officer.  While in the Navy, Bill was a member of their Mountain Bike team that competed against various units.

Officer John R. Shemeluk (right) is also a member of the bike patrol. Officer Shemeluk was added to the Bike Patrol to enhance the patrols of the Borough since this unit has had such a terrific track record.

In a typical shift for our bike patrol, they average anywhere from 25 to 40 miles, patrolling places from Route 420, to the wooded area at the Hollow.  If you encounter the officers while on patrol, feel free to ask them to explain the equipment they carry while on patrol.
